Pre-Tattoo Preparation
Great tattoos aren’t just made in the chair; they start with how you show up. Follow these essential steps to prep your skin, stay comfortable, and ensure your session goes as smooth as the ink.
1. Hydrate and Nourish
Water is Key: Start increasing your water intake 24–48 hours before your appointment. Hydrated skin takes ink much better than dehydrated skin.
Eat a Full Meal: Never get tattooed on an empty stomach. Eat a protein-rich meal about 1–2 hours before your session to keep your blood sugar stable and prevent fainting.
Pack Snacks: For long sessions, bring “bench snacks” like fruit, granola bars, or juice to keep your energy up.
2. Skin Care Prep
Moisturize: Apply lotion to the area daily for a week leading up to your appointment (but do not apply lotion on the actual day of the tattoo).
Sun Protection: We cannot tattoo over a sunburn. If the area is burnt, peeling, or damaged, we will have to reschedule. Keep the area covered or wear SPF 50+.
Shaving: Leave the heavy lifting to us. If you shave the area yourself and get a razor burn or a nick, it can complicate the tattoo. Your artist will handle the professional prep.
3. The "Don'ts" (Crucial)
No Alcohol: Avoid drinking for 24 hours before your session. Alcohol thins your blood, leading to excess bleeding, which can wash out the ink.
Limit Caffeine: Too much coffee can make you jittery and increase your heart rate, making it harder to sit still.
Blood Thinners: Avoid Aspirin or Ibuprofen unless medically necessary, as these can also cause excess bleeding.
4. What to Wear
Loose Clothing: Wear clothes that allow easy access to the area being tattooed.
Dark Colors: Tattoo ink can splatter. Don’t wear your favorite white t-shirt!
Layers: Your body temperature may drop during a long session (the “tattoo chills”). Bring a hoodie or flannel just in case.
Pro Tip: Make sure you get a good night’s sleep! Being well-rested significantly increases your pain tolerance and helps you stay calm during the session.
